Coaches:

We seek coaches with strong technical backgrounds. Some coaches come from the High School level while others come from the community.  All coaches bring a strong fundamental approach to our program.

Bios

Rick Despatie

Rick is now entering his 28th year of coaching including 20 of those years at the competitive level.  He will be returning this year as the head coach of the Bantam AA team.

He is currently a math teacher at St. Matthew Catholic High School and the head coach of their very successful girl’s Tigers program for the past 17 years.  The Tigers have won 9 city championships over the last 10 years.

Rick is especially proud that many of his players over the years have moved on to college, university and national team programs. This is a direct result of Rick’s guidance and dedication to developing both the St. Mathew and Capital Xelles basketball programs over the years.

He has coached AA ringette for the past 15 years and has led them to provincial championships for 13 of those years.

The most rewarding part of Rick’s involvement in the Capital Xelles program is seeing each individual girl, and in turn the team, progress over time.

Tanya Wakefield

Tanya played guard at St. Mary’s High School and Mohawk College in Hamilton. Her Mohawk Mountaineers team won the bronze medal in the 1990 CCAA National Championship. Tanya continues to play basketball in Ottawa city leagues.

Tanya began coaching with Above the Rim Basketball School in 2002. She has also coached in the Gloucester-Cumberland Basketball Association from 2005 to 2009.

Tanya’s technical knowledge and passion for the game, as well as her focus on solid fundamentals and team play enhances the development of her basketball players. Her goal is to share her enthusiasm and love of the game of basketball with her team as she helps her players strive to reach their full potential as basketball players.
