Capital Xelles Congratulate Teams on Strong Performances

(Ottawa) – The Capital Xelles Girls Basketball Club congratulates its teams on a strong finish to their Eastern Ontario Basketball Association (EOBA) seasons.

It was a case of young and old, as the Xelles U12 Major Atom and U19 Junior teams each won Gold at the League’s season ending EOBA Championship tournaments. The Club's two U16 Major Midget Xelles teams each medaled in their EOBA Championships with the Midget 2 team taking Silver in a heart-stopping overtime final, while the Midget 1 team defeated the League's top finisher in the regular season, to win Bronze in their division.

The Atom Xelles, under the tutelage of first-year Xelles coaches Don Ayotte and MJ Caron-Smith defeated a strong ?? team for Gold. With ten second-year and two first-year players on the team, the future is indeed bright for the youngest Xelles team.

The Junior team capped off an undefeated EOBA season with a commanding victory over the Ottawa Shooting Stars in the Gold Medal game at their EOBA Championship tournament. Third-year head coach Chris Price was ecstatic with their performance, as his team managed to win the Championship with a short bench of only seven players. Their grit and determination were evident, as they blanketed their opponents with man-to-man and zone defenses combined with strong outside shooting and inside post play.

Second-year Midget 2 head coach Luke Chapman and his first-year assistant coach John Henry MacDonald also persevered with a short bench to get to the Gold Medal game, after a tough season of travel to play teams in almost every corner of Eastern Ontario. The Midget 2 team’s Silver Medal performance sets them up nicely for a strong run in the upcoming Provincial Championships.

The Midget 1 Xelles team finished third in the competitive Tier 1 EOBA League and managed to replicate that feat in the Championships with three impressive wins, including a dominating performance in their final game, that earned them a bronze medal. Head coach Chris Wakefield and assistant coaches Tanya Wakefield and Ian Faris were re-assured by their team’s punishing defence and strong inside and outside offensive game.

The Capital Xelles Basketball Club is East Ottawa’s leading competitive basketball club dedicated to developing girls between the ages of 10 to 18 to be better players and better individuals. Our success has proven that when you focus on the individual player’s abilities and development, the team as a whole succeeds. Not only do our girls become the best basketball players they can be, they also develop their skills of teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship which will contribute to their development off the court.

The Xelles Midget A team capped off their regular season with a silver medal at the EOBA Championships held in Elgin, Ontario. All three games were extremely competitive, with the finals ending in an over-time loss to the Arnprior Pride with a score of 48-47. The silver medal came as a result of an all around team effort with each player lending significant contributions throughout the day. The girls will now have a few weeks to prepare for the Provincial Championships in Kitchener, Ontario at the end of the month. A special thanks to all the parents who made the early morning trip out to Elgin on Sunday, your support was greatly appreciated!

The Atom Xelles team were crowned Champions in the Annual Xelles Basketball Tournament held at St. Matt's Jan 20-22. During that time the Xelles played three hard fought games in which the score could have worked in favour of the opposition. However, the girls stuck with program and were able to fend off last second surges in round robin play to capture victories in all three games. The formidable Nepean Blue Devils provided the opposition in the Championship game. After getting off to a slow start the Xelles magically rebounded from two - 10 point deficits providing the momentum heading into the final two shifts. A never quit attitude was displayed and the girls were rewarded with their strong play at both ends of the court. Congratulations to the team on their victory and for providing some exciting basketball for the everyone to watch. alt

The Xelles Bantam AA team captured the Nicolas Tournament on the weekend by defeating their opponents from Quebec City by a score of 36 - 30. The tournament final proved to be a nail biter as leads changed hands more than 20 times. Great Job girls. alt

The Capital Xelles Midget II team participated in a quad meet hosted by the Upper Canada Ice on Sunday, January 22nd in Ingleside, Ontario. After a disappointing over-time loss to the host team in the opener , the girls responded with two very impressive wins in the second and third games, beating both Hawkesbury and Cornwall by sizeable margins. The two wins came as a result of strong shooting, fundamental defence as well as solid rebounding contributions from all players. The team will look to build on these accomplishments as the season progresses and the girls continue to improve. Also, a special thanks to all the parents who made the early morning trip to Ingleside your commitment and support are much appreciated!
